Red Kettle Collection

Red kettles become the focus of Birmingham Rotarians’ annual holiday giving each year on behalf of the Salvation Army. The kettles are placed at the entrance to the meeting hall on each of four lunch meeting dates during the holiday season. Rotarian volunteers ring bells to bring attention to the kettles, and Rotary members are encouraged to place donations in the kettles each week. What makes this annual fund-raising event special for the Salvation Army is that the typical change (pennies, nickels and dimes) collected in other Salvation Army red kettles is replaced by Rotarians’ cash and even large checks. In most years, the Rotary collection in its red kettles over those four weeks will total more than $30,000.
