Small Grants

For many years, the Rotary Club of Birmingham Foundation supported humanitarian activities, from local service projects to global initiatives, through small grants requested by other Rotary clubs and outside organizations, as well as club projects. RCBFoundation policies determined the allocation of local vs. international grant awards as well as the maximum limits of grant awards. All grant requests were submitted on our own grant form.

While the club now supports only club-initiated projects (with few exceptions), many good works were accomplished through RCBFoundation small grants in the past:

  • Hand in Paw – animal therapy at Children’s Hospital
  • Band instruments and uniforms – ten local high schools through Birmingham Athletic Partnership
  • The Birmingham Zoo – incubator for newborn animals
  • Playgrounds – built 4 at YWCA; Bethel Baptist Church; Avondale Elementary School; Antioch Baptist Church
  • Reading Programs – Birmingham Rotaract, Better Basics, Literacy Council of Central Alabama
  • Emergency walkie-talkies for the Girl Scout Camp
  • Boy Scout Programs for inner city troops
  • Birmingham Botanical Gardens – trees and other plants
  • Rescue Helicopter Fund – Children’s Hospital via Rotary Club of Inverness
  • The Alabama Ear Institute – Hearing aids and projector
  • The Alabama Institute for the Deaf and Blind – Braille books
  • Boys & Girls Club (A.G. Gaston Club) – Teen Center
  • Basketball courts built for Inner City youth and children – Birmingham
  • Camperships – Children’s Harbor, Boys & Girls Clubs and Camp ASCCA
  • Scholarships – special programs like the Alabama Symphony Orchestra and the McWane Science Center, global understanding organizations, reading programs, hearing programs and leadership programs
  • Health insurance for underserved children – The Caring Foundation
  • Alabama Public Television – Young Heroes
  • Birmingham Public Radio – Radio Reader
  • Eye and Vision Health – S.V.O.S.H. (Dominican Republic, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Haiti, Guatemala)
  • The Rotary Limb Project – Jaipur, India
  • Starter fund for cataract surgery project – new Rotary Club of Daska, Pakistan
  • Sewing machines, vocational opportunities – Gujrat and Jaipur, India
  • School desks – Gujrat, India
  • Books – Mexico, Morocco and South Africa
  • Rotary Club of Santa Cruz Bolivia – furnishings and equipment for their children’s burn center
  • Jesuit Missions of Bolivia – transported a donated pipe organ from North America
  • Vocational training – Honduras
  • Plumbing facilities – orphanages in Ukraine
  • Rotary Club of Birmingham Sunrise – water project in Ecuador
  • Rotary Club of Vestavia Hills – educational program in Africa
  • Travel and hosting expenses for bringing a surgical patient to BHM from Haiti
  • The Bill Grant School – Dominican Republic
  • Wheelchairs – Ukraine and Venezuela
  • Blood bank supplies – Chennai, India
  • Water wells and other programs for clean water – Kenya, South Africa
