Rotary Trail’s Eastern Gateway

A Trailhead of the Red Rock Trail System in the Heart of Downtown Birmingham

Ten years ago, the Rotary Club of Birmingham made a bold gift to our city. We transformed a neglected railroad cut into the Rotary Trail, a four-block walking, running, and biking pathway that has become one of Birmingham's most beloved public spaces. What started as a project celebrating our club’s centennial has grown into something far greater: a vital link in the Red Rock Trail System, a catalyst for neighborhood revitalization, a driver of an estimated $79 million in economic impact, and an enduring symbol of what the Birmingham community can accomplish when we work together.

Today, we have the opportunity to build on that legacy.

We invite you to support the creation of Rotary Trail’s Eastern Gateway, a trailhead of the Red Rock Trail System in the heart of downtown Birmingham. This $1.5 million effort will create a transformational entrance to Rotary Trail at the 24th Street bridge. This next phase will expand the impact of the trail while addressing real challenges in the area, including underutilized space, safety concerns, and the lack of a clear and welcoming entry point at the trail’s eastern end.

The project will include:

  • Murals across bridge pilars to bring energy and visual identity to the space

  • A new plaza on the south side to serve as a gathering place for the community

  • Parking improvements beneath the north side of the bridge to increase accessibility

  • Enhanced lighting to improve visibility and extend safe use into the evening hours

Together, these elements will create a cohesive and inviting trailhead experience that reflects the quality, creativity, and ambition that have defined this project from the beginning.

Ten years ago, the Rotary Club of Birmingham helped create something remarkable. Together, we can take the next step and build on that legacy for the future of our city.
