Nathan Wilson Shares an Overview of Alabama’s Court System

This week the Rotary Club of Birmingham welcomed Nathan Wilson, State of Alabama Administrative Director of Courts. He recounted his personal journey in public service and provided a comprehensive overview of Alabama’s judicial system under Chief Justice Sarah Stewart’s leadership. Wilson discussed the overarching mission of Alabama’s courts to deliver justice with integrity, efficiency, and respect, while ensuring adequate funding, public safety, and trust in the judiciary. He explained the structure and responsibilities of the state court system, which includes 41 judicial circuits, multiple specialized courts, and a centralized administrative office. He outlined key initiatives such as modernizing IT infrastructure, improving cybersecurity, enhancing judicial training, expanding the courts’ role in reducing recidivism, streamlining human resources, and promoting transparency through better reporting and budgeting practices.

Bio for Nathan Wilson

Nathan P. Wilson was appointed by Hon. Sarah H. Stewart, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Alabama, to serve as the Administrative Director of Courts for the State of Alabama effective January 21, 2025. Mr. Wilson grew up in Mobile, Alabama. He graduated from Birmingham-Southern College in 2000 with a B.A. in History and earned a J.D. from the University of Memphis Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law in 2003. 

Mr. Wilson has served in various roles in the Alabama judicial system, including law clerk for Hon. Tennant M. Smallwood, Jr., in Birmingham, staff attorney at the Alabama Administrative Office of Courts, senior staff attorney for Hon. Scott Donaldson of the Alabama Court of Civil Appeals, the Assistant Administrative Director of Courts and Legal Director of the Alabama Administrative Office of Courts, senior staff attorney for Hon. Sarah H. Stewart of the Supreme Court of Alabama, and Clerk of the Alabama Court of Civil Appeals from 2022 – 2025.   

Mr. Wilson has been a member of several legislative, judicial, and state bar committees and task forces, including the Supreme Court Standing Committee on the Alabama Rules of Judicial Administration. Mr. Wilson was a member of the Alabama State Bar Leadership Forum, Class 9.
